History
History at Holsworthy Community College helps students explore the past to better understand the present. Through engaging topics and critical enquiry, students develop analytical thinking, evidence-based reasoning, and a deeper appreciation of global and British history. Our curriculum encourages curiosity, debate, and reflection on how historical events have shaped society.
Curriculum plans for Years 7–11 guide students through key periods, themes, and historical skills, preparing them for further study and informed citizenship.
History – Inclusive Practice
Inclusive practice in History supports students to understand and engage with the past through structured teaching, visual support, and scaffolded writing. We support our SEND learners by applying ADAPT strategies that promote clarity, accessibility, and engagement with complex historical content.
Examples of Adapt in Practice in History Lessons:
· Timelines and visuals support understanding of chronology and events.
· Key vocabulary is reinforced through glossaries and knowledge organisers.
· Teachers model paragraph writing and source analysis clearly so that expectations are clear for students to understand and use to develop their own knowledge and skills.
· Tasks are scaffolded and gradually build independence using live modelling techniques.
· Regular check-ins maintain focus and confidence.
· Ensuring that students are supported in their long term memory through carefully structured retrieval questions that develop students knowledge of key events, dates and concepts.
