SEND & Inclusion
Inclusive Practice: Ensuring all students thrive
As a small school, we have the privilege of truly knowing our young people as individuals. This strong, student-centred approach allows us to work in close partnership with students and their families, ensuring that timely and personalised support is in place whenever it is needed. By understanding each child’s strengths, needs and aspirations, we create an inclusive environment where every student feels valued, supported and able to thrive.
One of the ways in which we achieve this is through, inclusive practice that is embedded across all subjects through the consistent use of ADAPT strategies. These approaches ensure that lessons are clear, structured, and accessible, allowing all students – including those with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) – to feel confident, supported, and able to make progress.
Teachers adapt lessons through explicit modelling, carefully broken-down steps, accessible resources, and regular checks for understanding. These strategies are used consistently across subjects and are shared with parents so that expectations and support methods are transparent and familiar.
Each subject has given a brief overview in their curriculum subject pages that shows examples of what this could look like in their areas.
What Adapt Means:
The Graduated Approach to Support
At Holsworthy Community College, we are committed to ensuring that every student receives the support they need to succeed.
Where possible, students’ needs are met through high-quality teaching and the use of the ADAPT strategies. However, we recognise that some students may require additional or different support to that which can reasonably be provided within the classroom environment alone.
When this is the case, we follow a graduated approach, allowing support to be carefully increased in response to a student’s individual needs. This ensures that the right support is put in place at the right time, helping students to make progress both academically and emotionally.
The graduated approach is a flexible, step-by-step process that may include targeted interventions, specialist strategies, or input from external professionals where appropriate. Decisions are made collaboratively, involving students, parents/carers, teachers, and the SEND team.
Below is an outline of what the graduated approach looks like at Holsworthy Community College:
